Brazil have returned to the top of the FIFA world rankings after securing World Cup qualification while England remain 13th.The South-Americans haven’t played a match since June, where they were beaten by arch-rivals Maplestory Mesos Argentina in a friendly but World Cup qualifying victories over Uruguay and Paraguay in March meant they would replace Germany at the summit of world football.

Share this article Share The FIFA world rankings are based on countries' results over a four-year period, which makes Brazil’s return to world No 1 surprising given that they finished fourth when they hosted the biggest football competition in 2014.



Brazil’s last World Cup win came in 2002, where they knocked England out in the quarter-final thanks to Ronaldinho’s famous free-kick which beat former England goalkeeper David Seaman from long range. Germany followed up their 2014 World Cup win by adding the Confederations.
